The Lens of God’s Word

Dear Judah and my future grandchildren,

It is impossible to overstate the importance of the Bible in your life.  As you grow from a child into an adult that may seem an exaggeration.  As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that is more true than I ever imagined.

Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light to my path.

Ps 119:105

As people we are designed to live in connection with God.  Sin broke that connection so that we can’t live properly.  We actually don’t see ourselves, the world around us or even God correctly since sin entered the world through Adam’s sin.  God’s word is a lens to help us see ourselves, the world around us and most importantly Him correctly.  That doesn’t mean that just because we have His word that we automatically see everything correctly.  Our view of everything is so messed up that it takes God, through His work as the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, a lifetime of constant work.  Even then God’s work in us to see everything properly won’t be complete until He takes us to be with Him in heaven.

God’s word is your guide to see everything as it should be seen.  It is your guide to see God’s goodness, holiness, righteousness, mercy, love, and all the other attributes of God that it speaks of.  As you read it and take it to heart, you will notice a joy, thankfulness, strength and praise grow in you.  You will be like a tree by a river that is constantly watered and nourished.  It is strong and can withstand anything.

God wants so much good for you.  His word is one of the ways He works that out in you.  Read it, digest it, memorize it, even when it is hard to do so.  Don’t do it because it makes God love you more, because it doesn’t.  God already loves you beyond your imagination.  Do it because it enables you to see and experience the goodness of God.

Never forget that,

Grandpa
